Doctor’s Biography

Dr. Geoffrey Read - Background

Dr. Geoffrey, graduated in 1980 as an orthopaedic surgeon from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, completing extensive medical training. During orthopaedic training, I conducted basic research on knee ligament healing and cartilage behavior in response to joint movement.

Early in his career, Dr Read co-founded the South African Arthroplasty Society with five other orthopaedic surgeon colleagues. As a junior consultant, he established the Arthroplasty Unit at Baragwanath Hospital while developing a strong interest in arthroscopy. Years later, his arthroscopy interest led him to become a founding member of the South African Arthroscopy Society as well.

Dr Read worked in academia, both full-time and part-time, from 1980 until approximately 2004, contributing significantly to orthopaedic research. During this period, he helped design various prostheses—especially hip-related—and became deeply involved in biomaterials and implant innovation. He collaborated with South Africa’s CSIR and Switzerland’s Sulzer Medical Research, focusing primarily on biomaterials used in orthopaedic surgery. Dr Read pioneered uncemented joint replacement technology in South Africa, with a particular focus on uncemented total hip replacement procedures.

Dr Read was also the co-introducer of arthroscopic procedures by means of fibre-optics into orthopaedics in the Johannesburg area in 1980. It is therefore not surprising that Dr Read’s professional career has been involved in specialized joint replacement surgery of both the hip and the knee, revision surgery and more particularly specializing in joint replacement surgery in young people.

In terms of arthroscopic surgery, Dr Read has been very much involved in arthroscopic surgery even prior to 1980. Dr Read has been involved in arthroscopic surgery involving the hip, the knee, the shoulder, the ankle and the wrist.

Dr Read was involved in sports medicine and in fact was the orthopaedic surgeon who looked after the biggest single football club in South Africa for many years.
